KONTRAST presents ROBBIE LOWE

Robbie Lowe

Over his 15 year career behind the decks Robbie Lowe has proven himself to be one of Australia’s most talented and respected Deep & Tech-House to Progressive & Techno DJ’s.

If an international artist has come through Sydney over the past decade, there’s a good chance Robbie has supported them at least once. In 2008, Robbie warmed up the crowd for Tiesto’s Sydney Elements Of Life Tour shows in Sydney. At the same time he took up the reins as part Label Manager & A&R for the UK-based Beat Code & Low Pressing record company.

These new roles go hand in hand with Robbie’s new production focus – His union with Sydney progressive house producer gun Matt Rowan bore fruit through 2007/08 with releases on Hussle, Outta Limits and Rococo, and he’s recently tuned in another release with Rowan for Proton Music titled ‘Ground Swell’.

Through 2009 Robbie continued is high profile supports including the ‘We Love Sounds’ festival and warming up for Danny Howell’s New Years Eve Renaissance show at The Chinese Laundry.

Already in 2010, Robbie has played the Sydney leg of the Big Day Out festival, and with Steve Lawler, John Digweed, Way Out West and Hernan Cattanoe. Alongside residencies at Musica, Shrug, Spice and Sunday Sessions.

Add to this a forthcoming solo EP and remix work with fellow Sydney DJ Tim Culbert, showcasing the deeper side of house music.

“Robbie has been a great warm up DJ for me in Sydney, always top stuff!"
Hernan Cattaneo

Robbie Lowe Interview

So how did it all begin?

It all began from being introduced to turntables around 1990 by a really good friend and established Sydney DJ. I hijacked his decks for about a week and didn't leave them alone. Eventually I bought my own and there was no turning back. Prior to this as a kid I was always into my electronic sounds. It was a natural progression really and I was always intrigued with mixing records and the whole culture. I'd often listen to mix tapes fantasizing the idea it was me playing at a big party

What was the first club you ever played at?

First club I think was the Top Floor of the CBD Hotel a long time ago.

What was your first record/cd you bought?

Umm ... Think it could of been Soul To Soul - Back To Life, or The Rebel MC And Double Trouble - Street Tuff. First CD could of been something from Public Enemy or alike.

Out of all the music you have, which track ‘never fails?'

It would have to be Gat Decor's Passion for me. Its passes through the generations and still sounds as good as the day it was first released in 1992.

What's your favourite track of all time?

Again Gat Decor's Passion or Kinetic's Golden Girls.

Funniest thing that ever happened while Dj’ing?

Happened recently actually. I wasn't dj'ing but falls under the same umbrella. I was booked to play a set at the Subsonic Music Festival last year. It was a 3 hour drive from Sydney just out of Newcastle at an outdoor location. I left with enough time to make it but got extremely lost driving around on the top of a mountain range. After missing my set, still being lost and having the shits I decided to make way back to Sydney. Arriving back home I worked out that my girlfriend and me were in the car for 12 hours in total. All we could do was laugh!

Other DJs you rate?

Internationally to name a few, I like John Digweed, Sasha, Danny Howells and James Zabiela. Locally my favorite dj is Tim Culbert. He holds a perfect groove and makes it look so easy!

So how is the party scene in your eyes at the moment?

The scene is quite good I think. There are some great events, clubs and festivals. We also have a good dedicated informed bunch of club goers. With a bit more support for our locals and regular club nights I think our scene will only get even better.

When all the partying is over how do you like to chill out?

I really just like to relax! Wether it be surfing, eating or just spending time with my girlfriend. I also spend a fair bit of down time in the studio as well. Its a good time for me to do this being relaxed and a clear mind.

What advice would you give to up and coming DJs?

Be diverse and only play and buy music you like. Also remember practice makes perfect. This trade is not easy and takes many years and hard work to establish yourself. So be patient and enjoy the ride!
