Not an Englishman in New York but a Frenchman in Sydney, Julien Beltzung aka YokoO is no stranger to house music in all its deepest forms. A studio head in the true sense of the word, Julien spends much of his time pondering basslines and warm synth riffs that heat up dancefloors the world over. With recent releases on highly regarded labels such as Musik Gewinnt Freunde, BEEF, Affin and Kina Music, Julien has marked out a spot for himself in the global house music scene with talent being sought after from every corner of the world.

His musical intuition drives his production and his full, groove based approach to seductive house music turns heads of many a label boss from Kollektiv Turmstrasse, Shades of Gray and the Cosmic Cowboys no less. As well racking up plays from the likes of John Digweed, Anthony Pappa, Gorge, Brothers Vibe and Valentino Kanzyani, Julien’s music has proven time and time again it can reach the record bags of the DJing elite in every continent.

As a DJ, Julien embraces the dancefloor with a dynamic and honest approach sparking it up with fresh music every time. When you see him play, you can see a genuine love for what he is doing and that naturally feeds back to his audience, fuelling energy and the fever of the dancefloor. The warm melodies work with the heavy basslines to create a unique sound that is deep but still pumping enough to get a party started. . . . and going til sunrise.

With a prolific and impressive discography, Julien has made his mark on noteworthy labels to date with both original releases and a back catalogue of strong remixes. His latest batch of unreleased productions are an intense gathering of melodies, working with a defined sense of groove and depth designed for the dancefloor and beyond. With upcoming releases for Affin, Kina Limited, Hertzlich, Reckless Republic amongst others, YokoO will undoubtedly hit the radar of many music lovers across the globe.

Through his ongoing residency at Sydney’s most respected undergound nights such as the legendary SPICE after hour club and PLUS + 1 Fridays, Julien is fast becoming one of Australia’s hottest exports in house music. 2010 has seen him complete a debut tour of Europe, which will no doubt ignite the next stage of his career as someone to watch on the electronic scene worldwide.

-----------------
Robbie Lowe
-----------------
Over his 15 year career behind the decks Robbie Lowe has proven himself to be one of Australia’s most talented and respected Deep & Tech-House to Progressive & Techno DJ’s.

If an international artist has come through Sydney over the past decade, there’s a good chance Robbie has supported them at least once. In 2008, Robbie warmed up the crowd for Tiesto’s Sydney Elements Of Life Tour shows in Sydney. At the same time he took up the reins as part Label Manager & A&R for the UK-based Beat Code & Low Pressing record company.

These new roles go hand in hand with Robbie’s new production focus – His union with Sydney progressive house producer gun Matt Rowan bore fruit through 2007/08 with releases on Hussle, Outta Limits and Rococo, and he’s recently tuned in another release with Rowan for Proton Music titled ‘Ground Swell’.

Through 2009 Robbie continued is high profile supports including the ‘We Love Sounds’ festival and warming up for Danny Howell’s New Years Eve Renaissance show at The Chinese Laundry.

Already in 2010, Robbie has played the Sydney leg of the Big Day Out festival, and with Steve Lawler, John Digweed, Way Out West and Hernan Cattanoe. Alongside residencies at Musica, Shrug, Spice and Sunday Sessions.

Add to this a forthcoming solo EP and remix work with fellow Sydney DJ Tim Culbert, showcasing the deeper side of house music.

“Robbie has been a great warm up DJ for me in Sydney, always top stuff!"
Hernan Cattaneo

Matt Weir
---------------
From a young age Matt had a diverse, almost eclectic taste in music, from reggae to rock, hip-hop to house, which turned into an eventual love of electronic music in all its forms. This love was cultivated in the late 90’s and turn of the century when Breaks and House, with rhythmic bass lines and epic vocals would keep the dance floors of The Underground, Globe and Yu filled, what seemed like every night of the week with parties like Funk Trust, Kink and Sounds on Sunday growing Matt’s desire to no longer sit on the sidelines. So in 2005/2006 with good mate Dave, Matt decided it would be a good time to start mixing himself. They bought themselves a set of Technics 1200’s, a shitty 2-channel mixer, started amassing a collection of vinyl and thumping out whatever they could to wake the neighbours.

Matt then went out on his own and moved into a different deeper, tech house sound, honing his DJing skills whilst being influenced by producers such as Vincenzo, Simon Baker, Lauhaus, Shur-I-Kan, Shonky and Phonique. Inspiration also came from local DJ’s such as Telefunken, Ben Morris, Murat Kilic, Shamus, Baz and Pete Nouveau for the way they consistently and enthusiastically approach music. Eventually Matt would love to concentrate solely on writing and producing music, but until then, he can be found showcasing his unique sound at Sydney’s best underground nights including, Spice and at his residency at one of Sydney’s leading weekly parties WHAM! at The World Bar.

DEEFLOY
---------------
DeeFloy is the affiliation of two musically minded Dj's and Promoters. Rees Hellmers and Steven Dee have been pushing there phresh sound of Deep Jackin and Tech House for two years. Starting out as a pair of bedroom banging Dj's doing local house partys but struggling to step into the nightclub scene. After hitting the clubs week in week out listening to the same commercial mixes they decided it was there time to make a mark on the Sydney underground society. They started playing on the Northern Beaches at Shore Club and Henry Afrikas doing regular gigs trying to promote the Deep/Tech sound, in an attempt to spread their sound into the Sydney city region. After getting noticed by the JACKIN' Crew they were then inducted into the city life of underground music scoring several gigs at Melt Nightclub playing along side Sydneys top locals including Matt Roberts, Illya Cooper and regular U.S jackin Locals. KONTRAST presents DJ SCHWA (Beef Records)

Michal Ruzicka, aka DJ Schwa, is the man behind BEEF records and electronic duo Shades Of Gray. Michal became engaged in music thanks to his father, who is also a musician himself as well as an owner of a famous recording studio in Prague – ORM. At the young age, dance music caught his attention mainly through Radio 1. Around this time he tried to mix his first tracks. In 2000 he started performing publicly. In 2002, Michal started his weekly resident night in Prague at Cross Club and since 2003 he has been working as a sound engineer at ORM studio in Prague. In 2004 Michal, along with DJ Slater, started working on the first Czech progressive label and by the end of the year “Tribal Vision Records” was born.

At the end of 2005, Schwa rapidly changed his style and the idea of an innovative techno/house label became reality and thus established the foundation for “BEEF Records.” BEEF records has since then been slowly establishing itself as one of the hottest labels on the tech/house scene with release from respected artists such as Robert Babicz, Deepchild, Kreon, Jet Project, Arnaud Le Texier, Shur-i-kan, Pezzner, Mike Monday…

Schwa’s sets are not strictly one style oriented; he combines sounds that progressively flow from deeper shades of house to techno rhythms. Schwa’s unique mixing and track selection has resulted in a particularly massive following throughout Japan, Germany, Czech Republic, Hungary, France, Austria, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Slovakia and Australia. Schwa has performed at huge international festivals such as “Open Air Field” (Czech Republic), “Parihaka” (New Zealand), “No Mans Land Festival” (Hungary), “Rainbow Serpent” (Australia), “Earthcore Carnival” (Australia), Good Vibrations (Australia) and while touring Asia Michal had a chance to perform at the biggest club in Japan – Ageha.

Schwa supported Djs/projects such as: Gui Boratto, Jimpster, Minilogue, Extrawelt, D-Nox, Propellerheads, Dj T, Jamie Jones, Ripperton, Alex Smoke, Antix, Orbital, Chemical brothers, Steve Angello, Deepchild, Kasey Taylor, Future Sounds of London, System 7, Paul Van Dyk, Ferry Corsten, Heidi, Tim Green and many more.

KONTRAST presents SHEPZ (Malatoid Records)

Shoaib Mughal

Shoaib has had the fortune of starting a career in music from an early age as a classically trained musician playing the violin, he then went on to master the art of lead guitar in which he has toured extensively around Europe as a session guitarist with notable acts playing to thousands.

He's also done his time with sound engineering where he has worked as the monitor engineer for top.1 acts such as Egg and Nizlopi (remember the JCB song? or the Citroen advert with the cars skating on ice?).

Djing was a natural path to follow once electronic music had taken over his life with all his previous experiences in the music industry, and a path which has seen alot achieved in such a short space of time.

Shoaib Mughal AKA 'Shepz' is the head honcho of Londons elusive 'The Techno Bug' and 'Minamal' parties; as well as Sydney's newest addition 'Church of Techno' which has seen him perform alongside some of the most respected in the industry such as Fergie, Ahmet Sendil, Smash TV, Perc, Bigger Than Jesus, Timo Garcia, Oliver Dahl, Shane Watcha, Saytek and Cozzy D. He has played at pretty much every known club in London (Ministry of Sound/Pacha/Egg/The End/54/Public Life/Aquarium/etc.) and even played alongside Exit Festival in Serbia 2009.

He is also signed to the great italian 'Malatoid Records' which has seen him reach top ten minimal techno best sellers on retailers such as Beatport, Juno Records and DJdownload.com. Huge support has been given from the likes of Magda(M-nus), Francesco Farfa, Fergie (Excentric), Tim Green(Trapez), Perc (Ovum) and Burnski (Pokerflat) just to name a few.

All available for download at Beatport, DJDownload, Juno etc.

EXCLUSIVE ONE ON ONE INTERVIEW WITH SHEPZ

So how did it all begin?

It all started with my first trip to Fabric through introduction from my brother Akeel; a superclub set in the middle of London which regularly see’s cutting edge minimal techno legends smash the crap out of Saturday nights. I’d never heard minimal techno before but this just completely blew me out of the water and left me hungering for more; before I knew it I was listening to mixes after mixes more specifically from the likes of Ekkohaus etc. who used to regularly dominate the London underground scene at the time.

Naturally, I then brought my first set of decks; a shoddy pair of belt driven Numark’s of plastic construction and not much good than being able to briskly hear what a record sounds like… the only way to beat-match was to use the pitch adjust as touching the record would completely fuck everything up – but hey, it’s a start… and by the time I got onto my first pair of Technics it was a breeze in comparison!

I only switched to CD’s because I was constantly breaking my back carrying a couple of cases of vinyl around in London, the distances you have to walk are considerably more than around here…

What was the first club you ever played at?

Haha! God! I remember this clearly… a mate of mine used to co-ordinate the Saturday nights at a student nightclub in Cantebury, Kent called “The Venue”. The resident DJ pulled a sicky and they had no-one to call on for it; the guy knew I had a pair of decks so called me in on an emergency to fill in… Little did they know that I could barely beat match at the time… Hence I found myself playing in a club, to around 2000 loose students with a formerly unheard genre of Minimal Tech House. Very embarrassing looking back – but thankfully no-one noticed the shoddy mixing, and the hot uni chicks were all over me… That was good fun after…

What was your first record/cd you bought?

The Most Beautiful Girl In The World – Prince.

Again… Embarrassing, but he’s now ‘the artist formerly known as Prince’ – What’s that all about???

Out of all the music you have, which track ‘never fails?'

Ooooh this is a tricky one! It depends what sort of set I’m playing and what the crowds like… One of my favourites however if things are going on an epic scale is an old classic:

Ame – Rej

Beautifully constructed piece of music with a real modal classical influence embedded within its blood. You really can’t go wrong with this one on a closing set, after-hours anyhow.

What's your favourite track of all time?

Superstitious – Stevie Wonder

I don’t think this one needs any explanation, just pure fun!

Funniest thing that ever happened while Dj’ing?

I get to see allsorts of funny shit when I’m playing out whichever country that may be… it’s really a hard one to pick one moment of it all. Especially when you’re a regular playing the after party scene in London; East London has a habit of breeding crazies!

This one time I was playing for Redlight Afterhours in London at a club called Aquarium; it’s an awesome club, my favourite twisted after party in the world and the place has a swimming pool and Jacuzzi in it! Anyway… before I digress… it was coming up to closing time and I was at my last track… this complete fuck head decided he refused to leave the club because he was enjoying it too much – so, he proceeds to climb up some trussing up the side of the club, and stay on top near the lighting fixtures whilst several security try to bring him down and all I could hear once my last track had finished was this…

“Please don’t make me, Please! I want to stay; I love it too much, I want the Technoes!”

He was Italian, says it all… Never get in-between an Italian and Minimal Techno, because you won’t win.

Other DJs you rate?

John Digweed when I used to watch him at Fabric, he’s pulled off some of the sickest most twisted sets I’ve ever heard. I was a little disappointed when I saw him in Sydney earlier this year, I think he considerably toned down his set for Sydney – I didn’t like that at all.

So how is the party scene in your eyes at the moment?

It’s going good I think… lots of variation around; obviously there’s always scope for improvement in everything, but since I’ve been in Sydney things have been picking up and I’ve had the fortune to meet and see some great local artists here.

I’d like to see things hot up even more though and see more people getting involved with supporting the scene. We need more large scale events, multi-room with multiple headliners in every room; I’ve seen a couple of cool events though so we’re definitely on the right track!

When all the partying is over how do you like to chill out?

It’s sad… but I probably spend more time on Facebook than I really should. It’s very counter-productive watching status updates… They should re-name it StalkBook.

I’ve just started setting up a studio here now though, I plan to get back into my production and get back to releasing records; I haven’t released anything for about 2 years now… Somewhat of a dry spell!

What advice would you give to up and coming DJs?

Play any opportunity you get and even if it’s for free; when I was starting out I’d always play at peoples house parties etc. this sort of thing really helps build up a following and you’ll find it much easier to get club gigs if you have a good solid following. Unfortunately it’s just the way the industry works; a lot of promoters don’t want to take the risk from an unknown. I’m proud to say however that we regularly offer new DJ’s debut gigs at Church of Techno which is the regular Sunday day time party I organise in the Sydney CBD, as long as you can mix well and fit in with what we do!

Also – don’t hoard tracks for the sake of it, only have a collection of tunes which you absolutely love and you can’t go wrong. Get tracks that you like the sound of and try to steer away from whatever happens to be in the Beatport top 100. You don’t want to be playing the same tracks everyone else is playing… It won’t get you anywhere and ultimately, it’s cutting in front of everyone with track selection which makes you stand out.

Also – I don’t recommend a stint of horse tranquiliser prior to hitting a set in a club, it’s a recipe for disaster!

KONTRAST presents DANIEL FARLEY (New Zealand) SATURDAY 2ND OCTOBER

DANIEL FARLEY JUNE 2010 FULL BIO

There's isn't much Daniel Farley hasn't done in his home country (The Home Of The Lord Of The Rings: New Zealand)when it comes to DJ'ing. In just four short years he had forged his way from bright up and comer to one of the most talented & established names in the NZ scene.

This is perhaps earmarked in 2010 by being voted the #1 Electro-House DJ in New Zealand at the Nite:Life awards, the countries largest and most credible DJ awards.

But such an award doesn't describe full spectrum of Daniels sounds and influences, never one to pigeonhole himself into one genre, his upfront sound can range between in the early stages tropical-edged-tech to silky disco-tinged house, to finishing off a night on a more eclectic, driving and occasionally even chaotic tip. A true DJ's DJ though, Daniel excels at reading the dancefloor and fitting his signature style best to his audiences pleasure, and playing with energy and finesse that is well beyond his years.

This diverse range of musical knowledge and taste has seen Daniel and warm up and warm down, for an enormous array of the world's finest talent, supporting global superstars including Carl Cox, Paul Van Dyk, & Steve Angello to big-name party-starters like The Crookers, A-Trak , DJ Zinc to some of the coolest house producers of now such as Riva Starr, Bart B More & SOLO. In fact he has supported over 100 A-List internationals at festivals and events across NZ in his time behind the decks.

He has held down only the finest of residencies in his home of Auckland including a 3 year residency at the then-infamous CODE nightclub from 2006-2009, before being one of the driving forces behind new hotspot BE for the past 18 months, along with other top residents and promoters taking the club from humble beginnings at it's openings to playing cutting-edge music to in excess of 1000s every weekend. In addition he has played at every other premium club across New Zealand worth mentioning, and played across the ditch at top venues such as Prince, Chinese Laundry, Tank, Family World, Monastery, & Soho to name a few. Festivals and dance parties? He has done them all in NZ including Summadayze , Rhythm & Vines , Future Music Festival, We Love Sounds , Godskitchen, Ministry Of Sound , Deep Hard N Funky, and many more.

His own productions and remixes have also started going from strength to strength and are gaining international acclaim. His original productions have been played from DJs as diverse as Doorly to Renaissance Man, bigupped by the likes of Steve Aoki and the Round Table Knights and his debut release 'Airbag' was reviewed by the prestigious iDJ Magazine and rated 9/10 and a must have tune.

Also having collaborated with a range of top Australasian artists: Tom Piper, Danny T, Maya & Vanya, Chaos In The CBD, and Tim Corin under their Farley & Corin moniker, and remixed the likes of Kid Dub, Micky Slim, Magik Johnson, & Greg Churchill.

Already having releases on labels such as Vacation Records, Miami's Vertical Lift, and his own new imprint Bakehaus Records with fellow Tom Piper, things are only looking up and up production wise with many more hot collaborations and remixes set to drop over the course of 2010.

KONTRAST presents PETER HORREVORTS (BEEF Records, Global Underground) Saturday 11th September

Peter Horrevorts (BEEF Records, Global Underground)

Peter Horrevorts was born in 1983 in a small village called Hilvarenbeek in the south of Holland. In his early youth, Peter's creativity was focused on drawing, painting and sculpting. His passion for music was inspired by the wide variety of sounds played at home by his music loving mother. His interest developed further when he encountered the electronic sounds of the late 80's and amongst his favourite artists and bands were Depeche Mode, New Order, Yello, Ultravox and also Michael Jackson.

At the beginning of the 90's the then 'unusual' style of techno captured his imagination and he realised that here was a sound he'd been searching for. The futuristic themes matched his interests in science fiction and the rhythmic structures of techno, unlike any other music before, made him feel like dancing.

He was fascinated by all of the new, previously unheard sounds and was keen to understand how to create them. Soon, he'd bought his own computer, learned about music programs and eagerly set about making his own music. After years of experimentation and a long search for his own sound, he made his first digital release on Sublogic Corporation, a digital record label.

The positive reaction to the release, encouraged him to circulate a few demo’s and within 2 weeks he'd signed his first contract with Dj Misjah’s X-Trax Records.

In 2003 he released his first 12” record; “Sweets EP” on X-trax under his guise “Forcesupreme”. His unique, bombastic and energetic style was highly appreciated by DJ’s like Marco Carola, Carl Cox and Adam Beyer.

Currently, the young talent has records released through Gem, Global Underground, Rennaisance, X-trax and Beef and has remixed work from artists such as Ferry Corsten, Dj Misjah and Melvin Reese. A pretty impressive discography for a guy of his years.

WHAT WE SAY:
“Peter Horrevorts is one of those rare artists who are NOT constantly flooding the market with hundreds of digital releases. Instead of that he is focusing on a real quality output. Pretty much every single track and remix that Peter does is getting hand picket by the worlds biggest DJs and licensed for respected compilation series on labels such as Ministry Of Sound, Global Underground and Renaissance.

His latest remix work for Beef records compilation Prime Cuts III reached top chart positions on Beatport and chart support from Fedde Le Grand and Alex Kenji. Remix of Steve Ward for Chameleon Recordings is getting hammered by Nick Warren, Christian Smith and Umek. Even Carl Cox is aware of this talent and gave Peter a chance to perform live on the Carl Cox Global radio show.”

Dj Schwa (Shades Of Gray, Beef records)

KONTRAST presents SAM SERENE

EXCLUSIVE ONE ON ONE INTERVIEW WITH SAM SERENE

So how did it all begin?

My older brother was heavily into house so I was exposed to it at an early age. It was much less accessible at the time. It was like nothing I'd ever heard before and found house music so cool and exiting. I started collecting records shortly after.

What was the first club you ever played at?

I played at dozens of raves and smaller parties but the first bigger club would have to be Kink at the Arthouse or Together at Home.

Out of all the music you have what track never fails?

I believe every track I buy serves a purpose. They are all tools and I use them accordingly forever finding different ways they work and react together "the right Kontrast ;)" I'd like to think that I only ever drop tracks that are going to work. That's never failed me.

What's your favourite track of all time?

Too many to mention! So much music being made by so many talented producers. Now more than ever!

Funniest thing that's ever happened to you while djing?

That would have to be taking the record of the rong deck playing to a packed moulin rouge, as you could expect the music stopped for what would have to have been the longest 45 seconds of my life. Boy was my face red!

Djs you rate?

Simon Caldwell
Robbie Lowe
Murat
Jay not so Smalls
Pete DBR
Sari
Sydney is awesome.

How is the scene at the moment?

This is the most exciting time for Techno in Sydney. Considering we're in one of sydneys longest and coldest winters. Very strong! Lots of new exciting things happening in and about town and heaps of cool people getting out there and supporting these parties week after week!

When the partying is over how do you like to chill out?

Watching chick flicks with my lover x x x.

What advice would you give any up and comming dj?

Get out there and support the djs you enjoy and nights you want to play at. Stay right away from discussion boards (nothing cool about being a music nerd) Try find a unique style or sound that is unique to you and speak with your feet!

KONTRAST & Golden Cage present "Confession"

EXCLUSIVE ONE ON ONE INTERVIEW WITH MURAT KILIC

So how did it all begin?

I began tinkering with electronic music about 4 years ago when I enrolled at the College of Fine Arts in Sydney as an undergrad at the tender age of 32!! I was made redundant from my job in the Investment Banking industry about 2 years prior and when I could not find employment due to market conditions at the time, I discovered this sleeping giant within…it became an obession and started to consume me & then a little techno monster was born!!! Whilst studying at CoFA I also took it upon myself to get acquainted with Ableton Live as well as getting taught Pro Tools at college. Since then I have expanded my knowledge to include Logic as well, so it’s been a pretty serious learning curve and there is always new stuff to keep abreast of. But it’s so rewarding, much more so than selling financial software to dorky brokers and having to watch rugby in coporate boxes to schmooze a**hole bankers!

What was the first club you ever played at?

Arthouse in 2002

What was your first record/cd you bought?

1982 Out of The Blue

What's your favourite track of all time?

All my tracks are like my children, you cannot have a favourite, youy just have to love all the good ones equally

Funniest thing that ever happened while Dj’ing?

2 chicks got in to a catfight and one of them pulled her very sexy tight dress over her head and showed off her amazing body before slapping the other girl. F**kiing gold (good eye candy too haha)

Other DJs you rate?

Ant J Steep, Bump DJs, Jeremy Joshua, DJ Schwa from BEEF Records, Claire Morgan, YokoO, Alex Kid,

So how is the party scene in your eyes at the moment?

Good but can be better. We are not exactly Berlin yet, but we are trying to keep the dream alive

When all the partying is over how do you like to chill out?

With my girl on the couch watching movies, eating Doughboys, Sea Salt flavoured Red Rock Deli chips and a Yalla Chocolate Raspberry Mousse to finich off, F**k YEH!! Oh and going to Ikea and Rhodes on Mondays when there is no-one else there LoL

What advice would you give to up and coming DJs?

Find your groove
Don’t get all your music from Beatport
Play your own style
Believe in your sound
Learn how to mix vinyl
Learn how to produce
Manage your profile intelligently

KONTRAST presents ROB ZOBEC

Exclusive Rob Zobec Interview Questions

So how did it all begin?

It all began in a bedroom with 2x1210’s, a crappy mixer, some cheap second-hand vinyl and a passion for good solid, house music

What was the first club you ever played at?

My first gig was at Neighbourhood, Ladbroke Grove,in London.Played the warm-up set for Mylo

What was your first record/cd you bought?

N.W.A. “Straght outta Compton” about 20 something years ago!! (Wow, showing my age……)

Out of all the music you have, which track ‘never fails?'

All of my music never fails!! But seriously, I’ve got so many tracks that never fail, it all depends on the way the crowd’s moving as to what I’ll play….

What's your favourite track of all time?

Really hard to answer, but if I had a gun to my head I’d say “Intro” – Fred Falke & Alan Braxe

Funniest thing that ever happened while Dj’ing?

Just the usual stuff – ejecting the CD while the track’s playing……

Other DJs you rate?

Way too many to mention although Koen Groenveld and Ahmet Sendil are some of the best that I’ve seen…..

So how is the party scene in your eyes at the moment?

There’s a constant ebb and flow with the party scene at the moment. One minute hot, next minute, cold. I wish there was more consistency to it all but there are people out there trying their hardest to change this and at the moment they’re doing a great job producing quality nights with great crowds and acts, so for the moment, it’s warm and getting hotter!!

When all the partying is over how do you like to chill out?

Spending time with my girl, photography, travelling, good food and producing music….

What advice would you give to up and coming DJs?

Find your own style and stick to it. What I mean is define yourself from the rest…..

KONTRAST presents VENUTO "EP LAUNCH"

Over the past decade, Sydney DJ Venuto has quietly spread his unique groove on dance floors across Australia, playing major events & sustaining residencies at clubs such as: LadyLux, Spice, onelove and Home Night Club. After making his mark in Ibiza, becoming one of the few Australian DJs to play at the world famous Amnesia nightclub and scoring regular guest spots at: Es Vive, Ittica and Es Paradis, releases and remixes then followed for the likes of: MN2S, Muzik X Press, Minimo Records, Soulman, South American House, and artists including Javi Mula, Danism, Jason Herd, Ben Macklin & Roland Clarke.

Venuto’s new original 'Love' is one of those records that grabs you from first play. Carried by a strikingly sweet vocal hook and a huge chord part, it's simultaneously a throwback to a time when solid old fashioned bouncy house music ruled the roost, and a bang up-to-date modern club record. Killer remix interpretations from Dutch master Carl Tricks, MOS Germany prodigies Plastik Funk & Feenixpawl add up to a special package from an emerging local talent you'll be hearing a lot more from.

KONTRAST presents SIMON CALDWELL

Simon Caldwell is one of a handful of DJ's whose name adds a certain integrity to an event. Throughout the 12 years he's been playing records to beer drinkers, bum shakers and radio listeners alike, he has managed to avoid the stifling 'style' classification so many other DJ's trap themselves into, keeping himself free to draw on his varied loves of deep, soulful house, techno, funk, jazz, electro, booty, hip hop and anything else which catches his ear.

Born and raised in Sydney, Simon began playing records in 1991 when he inherited the Funk Inc. show on 2-MBS FM from Paul Carroll, playing a mix of funk, jazz, soul, hip hop, house (and whatever) for over five years. During this time he also teamed up with Trevor Parkee for some small gigs, which soon led to a residency at the now legendary 'All Funked Up' night at The Bentley Bar alongside co-residents The Continental and Kid Dolphin. Over five or so years Simon held residencies on six out of the seven weeknights at the Bentley Bar. In this way he managed to showcase his diversity, switching from the retro flavours of 'All Funked Up' to the tribal/deep house sounds of Thursday's 'Cuba' with Seymour Butz and Nervous. Simon also began to play at the Funk Inc parties and various small events around town, always noted for bringing new flavours into the mix, dropping instrumental hip hop and future beats (before they came up that wonderful term Trip Hop) into 70s funk and Afro beats.

As Simon's notoriety slowly spread, club promoters started to take notice. On a club dancefloor Simon could finally indulge his other musical passion * soulful house and techno - and it didn't take long before he was being booked, not only at clubs, but at larger events too. At first in back rooms, then in main rooms, Simon acquired a reputation for playing "The Morning Set", and began to develop shocking sleeping patterns. To the present day Simon has rocked the dancefloor of practically every venue and clubnight in Sydney, with notable residencies at Home on Saturday nights and The Chinese Laundry. He is regularly booked to play peak sets at some of Sydney's biggest house events and has pitched his skills alongside dozens of internationals, including Derrick Carter, Jeff Mills, Derrick May, DJ Godfather, Richie Hawtin, Kelli Hand, Frankie Knuckles, Gilles Peterson, Norman Jay, Ian Pooley, Luke Slater, Chris Duckenfield/Swag, Charles Webster, Metro Area, Steve Bug, Daft Punk, Recloose, Common Factor, Patrick Forge, Losoul, Stacey Pullen, Carl Craig, Rolando, Blake Baxter, Claude Young, Ectomorph, Dave Clarke, Russ Dewbury, Jamie Liddel and Ark.

Although Simon can hold his own in the big arena, his heart remains true to the intimate vibe of the underground house scene. He still presents the 'All Funked Up' radio show on 2SER-FM and also co-promotes 'Mad Racket', one of the freshest and friendliest underground parties in Sydney, held at a lawn bowls club, which has toured the likes of Herbert, Metro Area, Steve Bug, Swag, Charles Webster and Tom Middleton. Simon has also released two mixed CDs * the first with Ken Cloud * "DJ Excursions Vol.5" through MDS in 1998, the second with Mako * "Mixed Business" last year. He regularly plays interstate at the cream of Australia's underground clubs, from Melbourne's 'Honkytonks' to Perth's 'Maw Funk' parties to Adelaide's 'Cargo' and 'Minke'.

In 1998 he went further afield, playing in Berlin (at 'Tresor') and in Barcelona (at 'Nitsa') where he also attended the Sonar festival, having the privilege to witness Kraftwerk live. In 2001 he went to the Czech Republic to play three gigs with Ken Cloud.

As a DJ, Simon Caldwell continues to push new ideas and influences while still being able to draw on the history of his expansive and discriminating record collection. Whether he's playing deep house, techno, ambient, soul, hip hop, bangin' Chicago house, Detroit electro or jazz, you can expect to hear the old alongside the new, but in the hands of Simon Caldwell, music is timeless.
